Lin Chong is a major character in the classic Chinese novel *Water Margin* (also known as *Outlaws of the Marsh*). He is a former drill instructor (also translated as weapons instructor or commanding officer) for the Imperial Guards in the Song dynasty capital.
Highly skilled in martial arts, Lin Chong is initially presented as a loyal and honorable official. However, he is framed by the corrupt Grand Marshal Gao Qiu and his adopted son, Gao Yanei, who desire Lin Chong's wife.
Through a series of escalating injustices and betrayals, including being falsely accused of attempted assassination and sentenced to exile, Lin Chong is driven to join the Liangshan outlaws. He initially hesitates to embrace a life of rebellion, but Gao Qiu's relentless pursuit and further attempts on his life leave him with no other choice.
On Liangshan, Lin Chong's martial prowess makes him a formidable warrior and a valuable asset to the rebel forces. He eventually rises in rank and becomes one of the "Five Tiger Generals," leading troops in numerous battles against the imperial army. His story is a tragic one, highlighting the corruption and injustice that fueled the rebellions of the period.
